Get to know your apprentices and trainees

With the recent Australian Government announcement of a $1.2 billion wage subsidy program to support businesses in employing 100,000 apprentices and trainees, it’s a no-brainer to introduce apprentices and trainees to support the rebuilding of your organisation and the economy, and to provide opportunities for the community.

Under the new program, employers will be eligible for 50 percent of the wages for a new or recommencing apprentice or training for the period up to 30 September 2021, up to $7000 a quarter. Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said that apprenticeships are an important pathway to get young people into jobs and to ensure a skills pipeline to meet future needs of employers.

But as with any type of recruitment, how do you choose the right apprentices and trainees for your organisation?

Of course, it’s important to have reliable application and interview processes, but part of the process prior to onboarding should also include screening and verification on the people you will be bringing into your organisation. This will help you confirm that you’re hiring suitable people to represent your organisation.

Does the apprentice applicant have a criminal history that may affect their performance?

Does the prospective trainee have a social media presence that is worrying and indicating values that don’t align with your organisation’s?

Does the prospective applicant have any conflicts of interest that would mean they aren’t suitable to join your organisation?

These are all important questions to verify and confirm prior to onboarding new apprentices and trainees to minimise organisational risk and avoid investment in unsuitable applicants.
